This school project asked us to select a book or movie and create a physical typographic piece related to it. I chose Housekeeping, a book by Marilynne Robinson, which is a modern classic detailing the wayward upbringing of two sisters. At one point in the novel, the two sisters fall into the care of their Aunt Sylvie, who refuses to cook or clean and is generally eccentric. Ultimately, the house becomes buried in newspapers and leaves, blurring the boundary between nature and domesticity. With each character’s name, I tried to portray this duality and also toy with positive and negative space, referencing their complex personalities. Underneath each character’s name is an excerpt from the novel that best showcases their temperament.
