Prior to its acquisition in 2024, Circonus provided an enterprise-grade monitoring and analytics platform. While serving as the Senior Graphic Designer there, I often assisted the Senior UI Engineer with various UI/UX challenges, such as the product navigation, getting started wizard, and integrations library.
During the last year of my tenure, we decided to move our platform’s frontend to the Opensearch analytics framework and visualization suite, a project we internally dubbed “Circonus 3.0.” To re-envision the Circonus user experience, I analyzed both qualitative and quantitative data on the legacy platform. Initially, I conducted interviews with existing customers and fellow team members to understand their motivations and pain points. Then, I explored user journey analytics and session recordings within Fullstory’s behavioral data platform.
Using the Opensearch Figma Library as a starting point, I began designing a UI/UX for Circonus that would better meet user needs and address known friction points, while satisfying business requirements. As much as possible, I themed existing components within Opensearch. However, given the singularity of the Circonus platform, it did require some custom components. As I completed initial versions of designs, I met with the Product Manager, Senior UI Engineer and other SMEs to ensure technical feasibility before scoping out a phased implementation plan.
As sections of the tool were built, we conducted moderated usability testing prior to the official release. For these testing sessions, we would ask current and prospective customers to complete specific steps within the platform. We recorded both qualitative and quantitative feedback, such as user reactions and completion time. This feedback was later consolidated and shared with the Product team so we could collectively plan improvements to the tool.
